On Monday evening with Sean Hannity, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, confirmed that House Republicans will call Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, as their first witness in the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.
“Will [Schiff] be subpoenaed?” Hannity asked.
“Only Adam Schiff can subpoena Adam Schiff, but there’s a precedent for this.” Nunes explained, but added, “But, remember, last Congress, they were hellbent on making sure that former Congressman Dana Rohrabacher testified. I said, ‘Look, I don’t think this is a very good idea to turn around and have members of Congress come and testify and give depositions.’ So, congratulations Democrats that were on the House Intelligence Committee—that’s now become the impeachment committee—they have set the precedent for members of Congress to give depositions and so you heard the Minority leader the Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy, say that Schiff is our first witness. You’ve had John Ratcliffe, a former U.S. attorney in Congress, say Adam Schiff is our first witness. So, yes, he, in fact, is going to be our first witness that we are going to ask to come and give a deposition.”
In 2017, Democrats insisted that Rohrabacher testify before the House Select Intelligence Committee regarding his meeting with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
House GOP members may call on Schiff to testify, but it’s unlikely that Schiff, who is controlling the entire process, will agree to actually testify. Schiff’s handling of this bogus impeachment has been under scrutiny for weeks, including his failure to disclose that members of his staff met with the alleged whistleblower prior to their submitting their official complaint to the intelligence community’s inspector general. In fact, he outright lied about it. Schiff’s involvement with the whistleblower is something that deserves scrutiny. Whether that scrutiny will happen remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely that the prosecutor, judge, and jury in this charade is gonna allow himself to be made a witness.
