Second Boeing Whistleblower Passes Away, Reportedly Died Unexpectedly Of ‘Mystery Infection’

A second Boeing whistleblower has mysteriously died as the airplane manufacturer faces extreme scrutiny over safety issues with its jets.

“Joshua Dean, a former quality auditor at Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems and one of the first whistleblowers to allege Spirit leadership had ignored manufacturing defects on the 737 MAX, died Tuesday morning after a struggle with a sudden, fast spreading infection,” The Seattle Times reports.

The outlet noted Dean, 45, had been in good health and maintained a healthy lifestyle.

Carol Parsons, his aunt, told the outlet he died after two weeks in critical condition.

“Dean was one of the first whistleblowers to accuse Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems of cutting corners. He was fired in April 2023. Dean was rushed to the hospital two weeks ago for having trouble breathing. His condition began to worsen. He was intubated and developed pneumonia before contracting a bacterial infection, MRSA. According to a CT scan, he also suffered a stroke,” Collin Rugg wrote.

“Dean was represented by the same law firm who represented Boeing whistleblower John Barnett, who allegedly committed su*cide in March,” he added.

The Seattle Times reports:

Dean had given a deposition in a Spirit shareholder lawsuit and also filed a complaint with the Federal Aviation Administration alleging “serious and gross misconduct by senior quality management of the 737 production line” at Spirit.

Spirit fired Dean in April 2023, and he had filed a complaint with the Department of Labor alleging his termination was in retaliation for raising concerns related to aviation safety.

Parsons said Dean became ill and went to the hospital because he was having trouble breathing just over two weeks ago. He was intubated and developed pneumonia and then a serious bacterial infection, MRSA.

His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was airlifted from Wichita to a hospital in Oklahoma City, Parsons said. There he was put on an ECMO machine, which circulates and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, taking over heart and lung function when a patient’s organs don’t work on their own.

Per Fox News:

In describing the agonizing condition, they revealed the infection had “totally” taken over his lungs and asked for prayers. Days before his death, doctors were considering amputating his hands and feet, but he was too weak for surgery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Josh and his family,” Dean’s attorneys, Brian Knowles and Rob Turkewitz, told Fox News Digital Thursday. “Josh’s passing is a loss to the aviation community and the flying public. He possessed tremendous courage to stand up for what he felt was true and right and raised quality and safety issues.”

He was being represented by the same law firm that was working for John Barnett, another Boeing whistleblower who police in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Aviation companies should encourage and incentivize those that do raise these concerns,” the lawyers said. “Otherwise, safety and quality are truly not these companies’ top priorities.”

Barnett, 62, was found dead of a gunshot wound outside his hotel the day after he gave a deposition in connection with his own retaliation lawsuit in March.

Barnett had sued Boeing, claiming that he had been retaliated against, harassed and spied on by the company. He never showed up for his second day of depositions. His lawyers started making calls, and hotel workers found him dead in the parking lot.

Barnett allegedly told a friend: “if anything happens to me, it’s not suicide.”

Sam Salehpour, an engineer at Boeing, testified before a Senate investigations subcommittee that the company’s 787 Dreamliner aircraft could “fall apart” due to quality issues in the manufacturing process.

“They are putting out defective airplanes,” Salephour told the subcommittee.
