Firefighters and hazmat crews responded to a chaotic scene on Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut, where a tractor-trailer carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline exploded.

“Numerous firefighters, emergency personnel, and other authorities are on the scene in Norwalk, Connecticut, on the I-95 Highway after a petroleum tanker truck crashed into another car under an overpass, causing the tanker truck to burst into flames and explode. Large, heavy flames erupted along with black smoke underneath the overpass,” Rawsalerts wrote.

“Officials are reporting that major damage has occurred upon impact. The fire has since been extinguished by firefighters crews, and residents have been warned to expect significant impacts and delays in the surrounding area. It’s currently unknown if anyone survived the crash as this is still developing,” the post added.

CBS News reports:

Firefighters and hazmat crews are on the scene between Exits 15 and 16 south, where a tractor-trailer crash and fuel spill occurred at around 5:30 a.m

“Emergency Services are working to extinguish a petroleum truck on fire on I95, underneath the Fairfield Ave overpass in Norwalk. I95 is closed in the area,” the Norwalk Police Department posted on social media. “This will impact local roads throughout Norwalk for an extended period of time and will create heavy traffic delays.”

All lanes of the highway are closed in both directions. Northbound lane closures start at Exit 13 in Darien, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Drivers should expect heavy delays on the Merritt Parkway, too, while crews work on the 95 crash.

From the New York Post:

The blaze — which shut down both sides of the major East Coast artery — erupted when the truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gas slammed into another tractor trailer and a car at about 5:30 a.m., according to News 8 Connecticut.

Gov. Ned Lamont said no one was seriously hurt.

But officials urged drivers to look for other routes.

Local Hazmat teams and other authorities flocked to the site to clean up the hazardous material, the station said.
