A city council in Michigan has voted to officially cease fluoridation of its water supply.

The Norway City Council passed an ordinance to permanently end adding fluoride to the city’s water.

The town hasn’t fluoridated its water since the system failed in January 2022.

Iron Mountain Daily News reports:

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy required the city either fix the system and resume adding fluoride or pass an ordinance officially halting the practice.

Water Department Supervisor Dave Bal said damage to the building that housed the fluoridation system included corrosion on metal items such as electrical conduits and water lines.

City Manager Dan Stoltman said the city received a $21,000 estimate for repairs. In addition, the plans would require an engineer’s stamp, putting the total cost at about $30,000.

To pay for the project, Stoltman said the city could use monies the water department has set aside as a requirement of a bond, or it could use part of a $100,000 American Rescue Plan infrastructure grant the city received through Dickinson County. An application could also be submitted for a $25,000 state grant.

In addition to the repairs, adding fluoride to the water would cost up to $3,000 a year.

Stoltman added that no other Dickinson County municipality adds fluoride to its water system.

The outlet reported local residents were in favor of discontinuing the practice.

One resident stated: “The fact is that the science does not support the benefits of fluoride in drinking water but there is science that does support the fact that it is detrimental to every system in the human body. It is known that fluoride is toxic to humans.”

100 Percent Fed Up reported in February on a North Carolina county that voted to ban the use of fluoride in the county’s water supply.

Union County commissioners voted 3-2 on February 19th to stop adding fluoride to the water supply after residents expressed concerns about fluoride’s potential harms.

Abigail Prado, who leads the Moms for Liberty Union County chapter, told commissioners that fluoride in drinking water can impair the intellectual development of a gestating child.

Prado cited a 2019 study in JAMA Pediatrics that said, “maternal exposure to higher levels of fluoride during pregnancy was associated with lower IQ scores in children aged 3 to 4 years. These findings indicate the possible need to reduce fluoride intake during pregnancy.”

“I’m here tonight to present the board with evidence that fluoride is a known neurotoxin in the scientific community and to present a study which has found that fluoride in public drinking water can cause significant IQ damage to gestating children when consumed by pregnant mothers,” Prado said.

“Millions of pregnant women are currently being exposed to levels of fluoride that have the potential to lower their children’s IQ by at least four to six points,” she added.
