A new report from the Biden administration’s Department of Justice released on Friday determined that Minneapolis police had used excessive force and was targeting racial minorities before the 2020 death of George Floyd.
According to the Daily Mail, the two-year-long federal investigation discovered “that the systemic problems in MPD made what happened to George Floyd possible.”
The federal probe was launched in April of 2021, one day after former Minneapolis officer Derick Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter.
The report said that officers in the department have used excessive force, mistreated mentally ill people, violated First Amendment rights of protestors with impunity, and discriminated against black and indigenous people.
The investigation also found that the Minneapolis Police Department lacked systemic safeguards that would prevent or address such actions, including effective accountability, appropriate officer support, rigorous training, and robust supervision.
