Similar to what Arkansas signed earlier this month, Florida has just enacted a major school choice bill into law.
The new law allows all families to receive $8,000 in taxpayer funds to send their child to whatever school they like outside of the public school system.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a piece of legislation into law on Monday creating a universal school choice program.
House Bill 1, sponsored by the Education Quality Subcommittee, establishes an Education Savings Accounts (ESA) program under which every family is eligible to receive up to $8,000 to cover education expenses outside of the public school system. The vouchers will be distributed on a “priority” basis, with families of four making less than $51,000 annually receiving the funds first.
“The state of Florida is number one when it comes to education freedom and education choice,” DeSantis said at a Monday press conference. “Today’s bill signing cements us in that number one position because we will be signing legislation which will represent the largest expansion of education choice not just in the history of this state, but in the history of these United States.”
Under the law, students who are “residents of the state” or “eligible to enroll in kindergarten through grade 12” are eligible for the tax-payer funded voucher.
Florida’s previous school choice program was limited to low-income families and students with disabilities, which 1.3 million students utilized. Students were on a waitlist for the previous program, according to the Florida Voice.
With DeSantis’ signature, Florida became the sixth state in the last two years to move to universal school choice; Arizona first enacted universal school choice making all K-12 students eligible for state funded vouchers. On March 8, Republican Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders signed a piece of legislation into law creating a universal school choice program by the 2025-2026 school year.
This is fantastic. Now parents won’t be stuck with their child in a bad public school and will now be enabled to ensure their child has the highest level of education they desire.
This new law essentially creates a broad level of competition between private and public schools, forcing public schools to get better if they want parents to choose to send their children there.
Taxpayer money will now follow all students in Florida to whatever private or charter school they attend and won’t it won’t just be dumped into the public school system like before.
Well done state of Florida.

What a blessing if all states would follow the lead of Arkansas and Florida. Our public education system would either sink or swim and it would be up to them which way it went.
He didn’t have to sign anything, parents have ultamit control and power over thier children!!!

This can be good or bad. First it will make the teachers to actually teach what the parents want them to teach. Things like being a productive citizen, or being able to manage a checkbook, or to be capable of getting an actual job that pays more than minimum wage. it will make the teachers to have to be better teachers or they will loose their jobs because of lack of students. Now on the bad side the teachers will be demanding more money because of them having to train to be better teachers. That will mean higher taxes. But I would be willing to bet that the parents wouldn’t mind paying a little more, as long as their kids turn out not to be illiterates. We will have to see how this works out.
