Trans-Identified Male Charged With Indecent Exposure After Using Women’s Changing Rooms At Ohio YMCA

A trans-identified male is facing multiple indecent exposure charges after repeatedly stripping down in the women’s locker room at a YMCA in Xenia, Ohio, including when minors were present.

Rachel Glines, born Darren, was the subject of multiple complaints from female patrons between 2021 and 2022. Glines, 31, has now been charged with three counts of indecent exposure and is due in court on February 6.

Some details of the allegations were discussed by city council president William Urschel at a January 24 meeting of the Greene County Tea Party. In a recording of the meeting uploaded to YouTube, Urschel is heard recounting details of one incident stemming from a woman who brought her complaints about Glines forward.

“So she went to the front desk and said, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you know what’s going on… but there’s a naked man in there,’” Urshchel said. “She was informed, ‘No this is actually a woman, and that you shouldn’t be disturbed by this.’” Urschel’s comments were met by members attending the meeting loudly proclaiming “insanity!”

Urschel continued that the woman’s husband, a local pastor, attempted to seek answers from the YMCA staff and CEO, and was told that the facilities allowed for gender self-identification in accordance with state human rights law. In Ohio, an individual cannot be discriminated against in “places of public accommodation.” A place of public accommodation is defined by the state as a space that offers accommodations, advantages, facilities, or privileges that are available to the public.

According to Urschel, while “sex” is a protected characteristic in Ohio, there currently exists no cohesive definition of the word in the state’s constitution. Thus, some localities have adopted their own non-discrimination provisions. The existing provision in Dayton allows for a broader definition of “sex” which includes sexual orientation, and/or gender identity and expression. The YMCA locations in and around Xenia abide by the Dayton provision and allow individuals to self-identify into the intimate area of their choosing as a result.

Urschel would later clarify that the confusion surrounding the terminology may result in Xenia enacting its own definition of “sex” within city limits for matters of litigation.

“If you are a biological male who, today, says ‘I am identifying as a woman,’ I can go into the women’s locker room, the women’s shower room, or the women’s changing room and use those facilities,” Urschel said during his speech.

He noted that another one of the women who went to police was also the wife of a pastor who had been present in the changing room with her underage daughters. A third complainant was identified by Urschel as a mother who had been in the locker rooms with her girls.

“As of today, the Y has not changed course at all. So I encourage you, with your families, to let people be aware of what’s happening in the restrooms there,” Urschel concluded. He said that some of the young female members of a local high school swim team had also seen the nude male in the locker rooms while using the facilities.

In November of 2022, the husband of one of the women involved penned a blog post discussing the issues with gender self-identification at the Xenia YMCA.

In his post, Mark Atherton, a Christian minister, outlined details which suggest he had been the concerned husband Urschel had mentioned in his January 24 Tea Party address. Atherton states he had reached out to YMCA President Dale Brunner and Vice Presidents Joshua Sullenberger and David Thompson for answers, and had been told that gender self-identification was the policy.

“In other words, and these are my words, men with gender confusion, who feel like a female, will be able to enter and use restrooms, locker rooms, and showers alongside women–and vice versa,” Atherton wrote. “I know a person who was told that if they objected to being in these facilities with someone of the opposite sex, they must use the special needs/family facility.”

Atherton continues by stating that he has sympathy for those with gender dysphoria, but feels as though reality-based policies are needed for everyone’s safety.

“People with gender dysphoria have as much worth, value, and dignity as anyone else does. These people are not all perverts, nor are they all sexual predators. In fact, the research shows that the overwhelming majority of sexual offenders are heterosexual. Those who are confused about their gender need help recognizing the truth. They need a medical doctor to help them see that feeling like a woman doesn’t make one a woman,” Atherton says. “Please understand that the problem is not with the gender-confused person. It’s with the YMCA, and with society as a whole, who won’t give these people the truth.”

The incidents in Xenia are just the latest in what appears to be an ongoing saga of YMCA locations across the United States allowing males in the women’s facilities, sometimes at the expense of female patrons.

In August of 2022,  in the small community of Port Townsend, Washington who had been banned from her local YMCA-run swimming pool after raising concerns about a trans-identified male who had been in the shower rooms.

Julie Jaman, 80, had been a guest at the Mountain View community pool for over 35 years. Jaman revealed that on July 26, she witnessed a trans-identified male using the female locker rooms at the pool, and became concerned due to the fact he appeared to be watching the little girls as they changed out of their bathing suits.

Jaman picked up international attention after holding her own small protest outside of the YMCA, quickly gaining the support of women’s rights activists around the world.

Later that same month, Jaman’s supporters held a rally in Port Townsend which was met with violent backlash from trans activists.
