According to Inkerman, on Sunday, local sources reported that multiple explosions were heard around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant which is currently under Russian control. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also released a statement confirming local reports and noting that more than 12 powerful blasts were heard at the battered nuclear plant.
The IAEA has reported that while some of the buildings, systems, and equipment at Zaporizhzhia are damaged, they have confirmed that none of the damage is essential for nuclear safety to be maintained.
However, Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, is urging Ukraine and Russia to agree to implement a nuclear safety and security zone around the power plant immediately.
While Ukrainian authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the explosions, Russian media has already released several reports accusing Ukrainian forces of shelling the area.
There have been no reports of any casualties related to the blasts.
