Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the United Nations, says President Biden’s remark about a nuclear “Armageddon” was “irresponsible, on every level.”
She told “Sunday Morning Futures” that Biden “just strengthened Putin” by suggesting that he’s “scared.”
“Regardless of the situation, you never go and scare Americans,” Haley said, referring to Biden’s comments at a Democrat fund-raiser last week.
“You go and get in front of the situation, and you work with your military, and you work with your National Security Agency and say, OK, should this happen, what are we going to do? His job is to tell Americans, we’re going to be OK.”
According to a White House transcript of the off-camera event, Biden mused at a Democrat fundraiser:
“We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. We’ve got a guy I know fairly well; his name is Vladimir Putin. I spent a fair amount of time with him. He is not joking when he talks about the potential use of tactical and nuclear weapons, or biological or chemical weapons, because his military is, you might say, significantly under-performing.
“It’s part of Russian doctrine that they will not — they will not — if the motherland is threatened, they’ll use whatever force they need, including nuclear weapons. I don’t think there’s any such thing as an ability to easily lose a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon.
“So there’s a lot at stake — a lot at stake.”
By using the word Armageddon, “you just strengthened Putin,” Haley continued:
“You just gave him confidence to think that Biden is scared. What we should be doing is completely focused on deterrence. Is Putin dangerous? Yes. We should always know that, when a tyrant says they’re going to do something, we should believe them.
“We saw that with Putin. He said he was going to take Ukraine, and we saw him do that. We saw President Xi say they were going to take Hong Kong, and they did it.
“So now, if he’s saying that he’s going to do this, what we should do is deterrence by way of saying, if you do this, there will be hell to pay, making sure we continue to strengthen Ukraine, not by blank checks, but making sure that NATO and everyone else is giving them the equipment they need to fight Russia, because that’s the reason that we have to win, and then make sure we’re putting pressure on China and Iran.
“They’re Russia’s partners. If Russia is threatening nuclear weapons, then we need to go and say, China and Iran, what are you doing about this? Do you condone this?
“It’s — the reason that they do that is because they want us to run scared. You don’t run scared. You put your foot on the gas, and you make sure that they know that, if anything happens, we will respond, we will respond with strength, and we will respond aggressively. And Putin doesn’t want that.”
Haley on Sunday did not rule out a run for president, but she did say she has no interest in being vice president: ” I don’t play for second. So, no, I’m not looking to be the V.P.,” she said.
