WATCH: Psaki Runs The Spin Machine To Claim High Gas Prices Have ‘NOTHING To Do With Biden’

Why is America experiencing higher gas prices right now? Well, if Psaki is to be believed, it’s not because of Biden’s limitations on drilling on federal land or the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline.

No, according to her, Biden’s policies have nothing at all to do with the price of gas and that’s purely on Putin’s shoulders. In her words:

Sure. Well, to be very clear — and I think you all heard the President convey this in his speech the other night: The reason why we are seeing volatility in the global oil markets, the reason why the price of gas is going up is not because of steps the President has taken; they are because President Putin is invading Ukraine, and that is creating a great deal of instability in the global marketplace.

So, what we are trying to do and what the President is focused on doing is taking every step we can to mitigate the impact of that.  Obviously, he announced the release of more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, did that in a coordinated way.  We have a range of options on the table we are considering.

But where we are at in this moment is — certainly, we are taking steps to stand up for democracy, stand up for democracy versus autocracy, stand up to the actions of a brutal dictator — but it is because of his actions that we are in this circumstance.

Now, of course, there’s a hint of truth, a whiff of veracity, in what Psaki is saying; Putin’s Russia is a major exporter of fuel, particularly oil and natural gas, so any waves in foreign markets related to it could also cause waves in the price of gas.

Further, beyond just the conflict itself affecting Russian oil production, there’s the issue of the conflict increasing the cost of shipping, which has made oil more expensive, and the issue of the Europeans now needing to look elsewhere for oil and gas, something also liable to increase the price of fuel.

However, just because there’s some truth to her statement doesn’t mean she’s correct; while Psaki has a point that Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine has increased the price of gas, it’s beyond absurd to say that “the reason why the price of gas is going up is not because of steps the President has taken.”

If that’s the case, Psaki, then why was the price of gas going up before the invasion…? Why was gas already getting more expensive before the tanks started rolling?

The invasion has had some effect; oil prices tend to rise on news of war. But shutting down pipelines, limiting areas that can be drilled, and generally discouraging energy production also tend to push up prices. Less supply with a larger, or at least steady, demand means higher prices, after all.

But then again, Democrats never were the best at even basic economics.
