U.S. Women’s Soccer star Megan Rapinoe urged white people to “defer leadership” to marginalized groups to make up for America’s “gross,” “destructive” and “violent” history.
“Particularly for white people, I really do think it’s on us to defer to leadership of people who are marginalized and are traditionally cut out of all these stories, to not just lead, but to fill in the story,” she said in a video posted to Instagram this week.
“We have such a small understanding and narrow view of even what the history of America is—which, if you really think about it, is pretty gross in a lot of ways,” she added. “It’s pretty destructive and violent and hateful in many ways.”
Rapinoe was one of the first professional athletes to begin kneeling during the national anthem to protest “police brutality.”
According to one of her former teammates, Rapinoe would bully the rest of her team into joining her.
“I’ve seen Megan Rapinoe almost bully players into kneeling because she really wants to stand up for something in her particular way,” former U.S. Women’s Soccer player Hope Solo revealed in August.
Former President Donald Trump, who has criticized athletes for disrespecting the American flag and national anthem by kneeling, blasted Rapinoe in August when Team USA came in third-place at the Tokyo Olympics.
“If our soccer team, headed by a group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze,” Trump said in an email to his supporters. “The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics instead of doing her job!”
