UPDATE: Full video of the shooting has been added
A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed by police on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly about the same time as the ‘guilty’ verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial came in.
“Columbus Police said one person was killed in an officer-involved shooting on the east side of the city Tuesday afternoon,” NBC reports.
“One person was initially taken to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition, according to Columbus Police, and was pronounced dead at 5:21 p.m.,” the report continued. “Columbus Police said the victim is not a police officer.”
Further video reporting on the scene corroborates that the victim was a 15-year-old girl.
A crowd gathered to confront the police officers on the scene.
The protesters continued to gather as the nation is still on edge after the Chauvin trial.
But this may be yet another case of people jumping to conclusions before all of the facts are in. There are reports the police were there to investigate a stabbing.
And the police have now released bodycam footage of the shooting, not only confirming that the girl charged the officer with a knife, but turned to attack another female prior to the police intervention:
Much like the case of 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Chicago, Americans are being led to believe that the case could have happened to anyone, rather than someone posing a threat to others.
