Pelosi has announced that she will introduce the War Powers Resolution in the House in order to try and limit how Trump can respond to Iran should they retaliate over the killing of Soleimani:
FOX NEWS – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced overnight that she plans on taking measures to potentially curb President Trump’s ability to conduct military operations against Iran.
Pelosi and other Democrats have been critical of Trump’s decision to conduct an airstrike in Iraq that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, claiming he did not properly notify Congress in advance and warning about the risk of escalation in the region. Trump has also threatened additional action if Iran retaliates for Soleimani’s death.
“This week, the House will introduce and vote on a War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to fellow Democrats, referring to a similar Senate resolution to be introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va. “It reasserts Congress’s long-established oversight responsibilities by mandating that if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration’s military hostilities with regard to Iran cease within 30 days.”
The first War Powers Resolution was passed in 1973 in an effort to prevent presidents from using the military without congressional approval. Since then, questions of presidential compliance have become common, with controversy stemming from President Bill Clinton’s actions in Kosovo and President Barack Obama’s operations in Libya.
Pelosi is upset that Trump didn’t give Democrats a heads up that the assassination of Soleimani was coming and now Democrats are acting as though Trump is trying to take us to war. It’s simply not true and there are no “military hostilities with regard to Iran” happening. Trump is simply making sure Iran knows that if they do attack us for Soleimani’s death, we will retaliate and it will be significant.
Let me remind you that when Obama was using the military to bomb Libya in order to overthrow Qaddafi back in 2011, the issue of the War Powers Act came up and at the time Pelosi defended Obama saying “the limited nature of this engagement allows the president to go forward.” She said she was “satisfied that the president has the authority he needs…” and was against using the War Power Act to rein him in.
Obama was using our military to continually bomb Libya from the air to overthrow a country’s dictator and all Trump did last week was take out Iran’s top general using a precision drone strike. It’s not even close to the same thing. Pelosi and Democrats hate Trump so much that they are simply trying to spin this justified killing of Soleimani to make Trump look a crazed warmonger. It’s hypocritical and pathetic.
