Call me old-fashioned, or call me simple, but from my chair down here in Louisiana, America looks like a mess. Families are broken. Kindness is in short supply. Turn on the TV for 10 minutes, and the hate and lawlessness on the screen would make you think you’re watching a country that’s lost all sense of civility.
Simply put, America has fallen for Satan’s lie that biblical virtues are outdated and unnecessary. The liberal left has declared that Solomon’s wisdom and the fruit of the Spirit are dead — and people are believing it!
The path forward is pretty clear. On one side there’s political correctness; on the other, biblical correctness. Political correctness leads to corruption and degradation. Biblical correctness reaps virtue: goodness, love, peace, joy, gentleness, self-control and so on. Love God and love each other — why don’t we try that for a while? Anyone with a brain can conclude that the depravity of the political correctness path is not the answer.
Our Founding Fathers understood the merits of virtue. George Washington wrote, “To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.”
John Adams chimed in, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
The Founding Fathers’ point was that America would only be successful when her citizens act in a virtuous manner and elect virtuous leaders who do the same.
There’s a lot of complaining about our leaders today. And why wouldn’t there be? It’s been a while since we’ve seen leaders like Washington and Adams walking the halls of power in D.C. Politicians today are increasingly uncivil, partisan, disrespectful and generally lacking in virtue. Unfortunately, name-calling, far-fetched allegations and the outright lies to get one’s way have not been uncommon tactics in Washington, even from President Trump, whom I endorsed during the 2016 election and still support.
So, how should we approach our job of electing virtuous leaders?
First, recognize that the people in office are there because of the votes — and non-votes — of all U.S. citizens. In other words, if you don’t vote, you are voting by allowing the values of others to win. Sitting out an election in protest or because of general passivity ultimately accomplishes nothing.
Second, if you elect depraved souls you get depravity. For crying out loud, we need to elect godly men and women, or we are going to get more of the same.
Everything I do is vetted through the Bible, even my vote. The candidates who believe what the Bible says and act like it, those are the ones I vote for. Also, I exercise the virtue of hard work by doing my homework to look at their records and compare what they’ve said with what they’ve done. You should, too. This tool is a great place to start.
But what should you do when there’s no obviously godly leader to vote for? Find commonality where you can. Cast your vote for the person that gives us the better chance to remain a godly republic.
In the end, government leaders come and go. But God is always there. If you have your faith in Jesus, no government will shake your foundation. Stay rooted in the truth and share it with your neighbor. That’s the best way to remain a virtuous nation.
