At least eight people were killed in a shooting at Santa Fe High School Friday morning, authorities confirmed.

One suspect has been taken into custody and another is considered a person of interested, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters.

“There’s multiple fatalities, anywhere between eight to 10. The majority being students. One male is in custody. And then a second one, again, was a person of interest. Both are believed to be students here at the school,” Gonzalez said.

Texas authorities were first called to Santa Fe High School around 8 a.m. Friday, ABC13 Houston reported.

Possible explosive devices also were reportedly located at the school and off campus, according to the Santa Fe Independent School District.

“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active, but has been contained,” the school district said in a statement earlier Friday. “There have been confirmed injuries. Details will be released as we receive updated information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location. All other campuses are operating under their regular schedules.”

“At this time, students from the high school are being transported by [Santa Fe Independent School District] transportation to the Alamo Gym located at 13306 Highway 6. Parents may reunite with their students at this location. The district will continue to keep you updated as information is available. Safety and communication are our top priorities,” the statement continued.

Santa Fe Police, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies responded to the scene.

Sophomore Leila Butler told ABC13 that students believed they heard shots fired. Butler told reporters she was hiding with other students and teachers near campus.

One student told ABC13 that she saw a gunman shoot a girl and there were reports of a possible body under a sheet near an exit door.

Students were being lined up outside the school and gave their backpacks to police officials.
