A New York Times reporter was on CBSN today and actually justified the rioting and looting that’s been taking place all around the nation, claiming that it’s not violence:
In the tweet Jones says “Violence is when an agent of the state kneels on a man’s neck until all of the life is leached out of his body. Destroying property, which can be replaced, is not violence. To use the same language to describe those two things is not moral.”
Jones also says “any reasonable person would say we shouldn’t be destroying other people’s property, but these are not reasonable times.” After explaining how people protest police violence over and over again, she then says “when we have people say that people should respect the law, they’re not respecting the law because the law is not respecting them.”
She’s justifying this violence as if it’s an appropriate response to the killing of George Floyd, which is ridiculous. Rioting and looting destroy people’s lives too. Jones says it’s not moral to compare the death of George Floyd to the loss of property because it can be replaced, and therefore it isn’t violence. But what about the small business owner whose business was just burned to the ground which supports his entire family? What about the other people being assaulted, maimed and killed because of the riots? Do their lives not count too?
