House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is threatening FBI Director Christopher Wray with a contempt of Congress charge if he does not turn over a document that has been subpoenaed in connection with an investigation into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.
McCarthy was discussing the ongoing debt limit discussions during his Tuesday appearance on “Fox & Friends” when the subject changed to an upcoming meeting between Wray and House Oversight Chairman James Comer.
Their meeting comes in response to Comer’s claims that the FBI has been uncooperative in supplying internal records related to the Biden family’s business dealings with foreign organizations.
McCarthy reinforced Comer’s threat to hold Wray in contempt during the interview by claiming he had spoken to Wray and told him to provide the necessary paper by the end of the day. Comer has previously threatened to hold Wray in contempt if his agency failed to comply.
“Today is the deadline. So let me not just tell you, let me tell Director Christopher Wray right here, right now. If he misses the deadline today, I’m prepared to move contempt charges in Congress against him. We have jurisdiction over this. He can send us that document,” McCarthy said.
“We have the right to look at that, Republicans and Democrats alike in that committee, and if he does not follow through with the law, we will move contempt charges against Christopher Wray and the FBI. They are not above the law,” he added.
According to the FBI, publishing the paper could jeopardize other investigations and reveal a confidential source.
There are claims that the internal unclassified FD-1023 form at the core of the dispute contains information outlining an alleged “arrangement” including the exchange of money in exchange for making policy decisions, according to comments made by other Republicans.
Comer claimed that he is taking steps to limit the scope of the subpoena for the document in a letter sent to Wray last week. He has also added two other phrases, “June 30, 2020” and “five million,” which could be used in the record as part of this attempt.
“The FBI’s refusal to produce this single document is obstructionist,” Comer’s letter noted.
The FBI relied on a national security justification in a statement to the Daily Mail that opponents found questionable.
The FBI’s goal is to keep the American public safe. According to the statement from the agency, disclosing private source information might possibly compromise investigations and endanger lives. “The FBI remains committed to cooperating with Congress’s oversight requests on this matter and others, as we always have.”
The FBI refused to turn up the requested document when Oversight Committee staffers who are working on the “influence-peddling” inquiry met with them on Monday.

The as-yet-unidentified case agent working on the Hunter Biden inquiry claimed in documents obtained by DailyMail.com on Monday that he was fired last week without being given a reason. According to the information presented to congressional leaders in the documents, the agent had been working on the probe since 2018.
