Sen. John McCain aligned himself Saturday with a scathing New York Times column that ripped President Donald Trump for his remark about immigrants “from sh*thole countries.”
“Must read,” the Arizona Republican tweeted, along with a link to the piece. Written by Times columnist Bret Stephens, the article claimed Trump was motivated by “racism” in his course description of some third world countries.

t’s a pro-immigration piece with Stephens feeling “restatements of the obvious” are needed in the age of Trump, saying immigrants don’t “steal jobs” from Americans and they “drive out crime,” among other New York Times sanctioned truths. He saved his vitriol against Trump for last, echoing what’s now the go-to narrative on the left, attacking the president’s mental capacity.
“Donald Trump has not, to say the least, risen from a hole. But he is sinking into one,” Stephens wrote. We have a president even more ignorant of America than he is of the rest of the world. “Maybe there really is something wrong with the president’s head. Modify with any four letters you wish.”
As for calling out Republican leaders, leave to Sen. McCain to step to the fore in hopes of assuaging the concerns of the anti-Trump left. Social media was replete with liberals thanking McCain for joining with them in their contempt for Trump… and calls for him to align with Democrats to have the president removed from office.
But at least one social media user was up for offering some sorely needed perspective.
What a jackass old fossil @SenJohnMcCain continues to be. Interesting that these “Nation of Immigrants” articles always post pictures from 1900. We needed low-skilled workers then, and 0%, not 47%, of our budget went to gov’t assistance. #BuildTheWall #DeportThemAll #AmericaFirst https://t.co/mmyTaiVWxx
