Sorry NFL – Thursday’s Ratings Lower Than Ever; Are Networks Ready to DROP Football All Together?

There’s more bad news for the beleaguered National Football League this week, with their flagship Thursday Night Football ratings dropping yet again; continuing the NFL’s downward spiral following weeks of player protests during the national anthem.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the seventh week of the 2017 season saw even worse television ratings than week six, with viewership down a jaw-dropping 15% from this time last year and down 7% from just seven days ago.

“Last night’s TNF matches the season low for the CBS and NFL Network-aired September 28 opener, which was down 13% from the year before. As NFL ratings overall have slumped about 8% this season so far, last week’s Week 6 TNF went on to score a total viewership of 14.6 million, which was down 5% from the week before and even with Week 6 of the 2016-2017 season,” writes Deadline.

The ratings report comes hours after President Donald Trump launched an official online petition; calling on all players to remain standing during the performance of the national anthem.

Earlier this week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell back-tracked on previous statements regarding the player protests, refusing to ask his players to honor the flag during the ‘Star-Spangled Banner.’
