On Monday night, the driver of a U-Haul truck was taken into custody after allegedly slamming into security barriers near the White House.

According to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, the truck crashed on the northern side of Lafayette Square at around 10 pm.

Guglielmi said in a statement, “Shortly before 10:00 p.m. Monday, Secret Service Uniformed Division officers detained the driver of a box truck after the vehicle collided with security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street.”

He added that there were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel and that the crash is under investigation but that the preliminary investigation reveals the driver may have intentionally crashed into the barriers.

Secret Service, Metropolitan police, DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene.

Roads and pedestrian walkways near the crash site were closed as authorities investigated a suspicious package and K9 units were seen searching around the truck.

The truck was later deemed safe.
