Portland’s feckless Mayor Ted Wheeler, who just days ago finally called for increased federal and state assistance to gain control of violent Antifa mobs that have been terrorizing his city since summer, was accosted and assaulted as he patronized a local outdoor dining café.
Wheeler and a female companion were dining in one of Café Nell’s outdoor tents Wednesday night when a group of left-wing agitators pushed passed restaurant employees and confronted the pair. Wheeler reportedly asked the group to leave and the altercation turned physical, according to local media.
Wheeler was allegedly punched in the shoulder, although footage of the incident was not published.
The mayor’s office responded to the incident with a statement that acknowledged dealing with angry constituents is “part of the job.”
“Given the tenor of political discourse nationally and locally, it’s not unusual for people to confront the mayor and other elected officials in public,” spokesperson Jim Middaugh said. “The mayor will continue to support local restaurants and businesses as often as he can. He urges others to do the same.”
