A teen smashed the windshield of an FDNY truck with a rock and pulled a knife on the Bronx firefighters — before trying to get inside the cab, officials said Friday.
The encounter unfolded just after 10:15 a.m. Thursday near Boston Road and Pelham Parkway South in Allerton, where the 16-year-old hurled a rock at the ladder truck responding to a crash, according to police and FDNY officials.
The truck slammed on the brakes after the rock “shatter(ed) the windshield and cover(ed) the chauffeur in glass,” according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association.
The teen then pulled a knife, “began to attack Ladder 41” and tried to get into the front cab, according to police and the fire union.
Only the truck was hit by the teen swinging the blade, FNDY officials said.
Firefighters called for police backup, and the teen took off down the Bronx River Parkway when cops arrived, police said.
The officers chased the teen down and one cop pulled his gun, causing him to drop the knife, according to the NYPD.
No one was injured in the ordeal and the teen was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for a psychological evaluation.
“Crime and violence is on the rise in New York City and it is now affecting our firefighters from doing their job,” the firefighters’ union said. “Something must be done about this before it only gets worst.”
The Police Benevolent Association decried the incident, saying FNDY members “shouldn’t have to deal with this protecting NYC.”
This is insane. Hating the cops has become a pastime in De Blasio’s NYC, but hating firefighters? What did they ever do to anyone? Honestly, I think this is just what happens when you lose control of the city. Anything goes, no matter how bizarre. NYC is quickly becoming more and more like Gotham every day.
