According to freshman congresswoman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), her critics simply dislike her because of her power as a woman — not because she endorses radical ideas that could spread widespread misery.
“The idea that a woman can be as powerful as a man is something that our society can’t deal with,” she told The New Yorker, echoing the intersectional feminists’ mantra that men cannot tolerate powerful women. “But I am as powerful as a man and it drives them crazy.”
As noted by HuffPost, the New York congresswoman’s statements were in response to a quote from Jezebel’s Ashley Reese: “Women are often either characterized as hideous harpies like Hillary Clinton or pretty idiots whose ‘craziness’ is bound up with their sex appeal. … To her critics, Ocasio-Cortez is firmly in the pretty idiot category.”
Ocasio-Cortez told The New Yorker this “pretty idiot” category has caused her to receive a cavalcade of online harassment.
“I’m just a normal person. I knew that I was not going to be liked. I’m a Democrat. I’m a woman. I’m a young woman. A Latina. And I’m a liberal, a [Democratic Socialists of America] member,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “But this ravenous hysteria ― it’s really getting to a level that is kind of out of control. It’s dangerous and even scary. I have days when it seems some people want to stoke just enough of it to have just enough plausible deniability if something happens to me.”
Ocasio-Cortez says her presence in Congress deeply upsets Trump and adds insult to injury.
“I can see Trump being enormously upset that a twenty-nine-year-old Latina, who is the daughter of a domestic worker, is helping to build the case to get his financial records,” she said. “I think that adds insult to injury to him.”
Of course, Republicans are not Ocasio-Cortez’s only detractors. In fact, she has taken quite a few hits from members of her own party for tarnishing the Democratic brand with extreme proposals.
“Pompous little twit,” Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore said of her Green New Deal over the weekend. “You don’t have a plan to grow food for 8 billion people without fossil fuels, or get the food into the cities. Horses? If fossil fuels were banned every tree in the world would be cut down for fuel for cooking and heating. You would bring about mass death.”
Left-wing billionaire Bill Gates has also criticized some of Ocasio-Cortez’s financial proposals, saying she’s “missing the big picture.”
“The one thing that never gets much press — the IRS shows the statistics for the top 400 people of the highest income and the rate they pay. Anyway, you should look at that. It’s about a 20 percent rate, so it has nothing to do with the 39.6 marginal ordinary income rate. So it’s a misfocus. If you focus on that, you’re missing the picture.”
Politico reported in early January that several Democrats were deeply concerned about Ocasio-Cortez’s influence on the party, feeling she’s trying to dictate the terms without having any experience.
