As someone who lived in Los Angeles not that long ago, I can personally attest that the vast majority of the city hardly lives up to its glamorous, Hollywood-esque reputation.
I even lived in an area that would be considered a nicer part of the city, and it was just a stone’s throw away from areas ravaged by litter, pollution and crime.
Given all of that, you’d think that the LA City Council would have more to worry about than people who come into this country illegally.
You’d be wrong. Dead wrong.
According to multiple outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, the City Council unanimously voted to make one of America’s largest cities a “city of sanctuary.”
Los Angeles’ move follows similar initiatives in other California cities, such as San Franciscoand San Jose, that have seemingly adopted the policy just to needle President Donald Trump.
Somewhat surprisingly, the LA City Council voted unanimously in favor of this sanctuary resolution 12-0 on Friday. I saw “somewhat” because I’d like to think that at least one person on the council would have the wherewithal to speak out against this idiotic policy.
Then again, this is California we’re speaking of.
“We declare, for all those who have been under attack in this Trump era, that this city, in this day, in this time, will be a city of sanctuary,” City Councilman Gil Cedillo said, per KSAZ-TV. “It will be a place where people will know that they will be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin, and not by who they choose to love, and not by when they got here. They will be judged by their contributions to our city.”
Yes, judging a person by the content of their character as opposed to the color of their skin is important and the right thing to do. But what does that have to do with someone’s legal status in the United States of America?
Cedillo’s comments are classic virtue signaling from the left. He’s just spouting off parroted points about “being better” while ignoring the actual issue at hand.
Perhaps the most telling thing about all of this is that many have acknowledged it is little more than a symbolic gesture. Los Angeles has long welcomed illegal immigrants.
It truly boggles the mind that these cities seem so willfully ignorant of the role that established borders play in a sovereign nation. If we’re going to leave the Southern border wide open, as leftists want, why bother distinguishing ourselves as a country separate from Mexico?
It’s appalling.
Hilariously enough, Los Angeles’ move doesn’t even seem to be sitting that well with the very demographic it’s trying to cater to.
“They missed the opportunity to do this when it really mattered — back when the immigrant community of Los Angeles needed to know where its city stood,” Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California, said, per the Times.
Having recently left California, I wish I could say I was surprised by any of this. Sadly, I can’t.
