A top staffer for presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) may be jumping ship — and she may be headed to Camp Beto O’Rourke.
The Hill reports that Mindy Myers, who is considered one of Warren’s top political advisers — and was largely responsible for orchestrating Warren’s landmark 2012 win, building Warren’s defining narrative among Massachusetts voters and helping to establish Warren’s place among progressive leadership — is taking meetings with Beto O’Rourke, the failed Democratic Senate candidate from Texas expected to have a 2020 campaign of his own.
“Mindy Myers, who was one of the primary architects of Warren’s political rise and has remained one of her close advisers, had been expected to play a senior role in the senator’s campaign. But she has been in talks with several rival campaigns and is planning to meet soon with Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Tex.), who is considering a presidential run,” added The Washington Post.
Of course, this has a lot to do with Beto’s buzz: the one-time Senate candidate who was roundly defeated by sitting Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, is widely seen as a top choice for the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination, even though O’Rourke is largely untested, operated outside of the traditional party system in Texas, and has no proven appeal to national Democrats.
But the real story here is Warren. After years of being the presumptive successor to Hillary Clinton, Warren has nearly demolished her own presidential ambitions in less than the span of six months.
She took a disastrous DNA test, which some of her advisers are convinced she must apologize for, aligned with sketchy casino magnates in order to promote the interests of a local Native American tribe — something she thought might help her clear the air with those she appears to have culturally appropriated from — and watered down her own progressive rhetoric in a desperate attempt to appear both fully moderate and far left.
Even the Boston Globe cautioned against nominating Warren, calling her, basically, a walking liability.
“In 2015, this editorial page urged Warren to run, in part because of the lack of serious competition against Hillary Clinton. (Clearing the decks for Clinton didn’t exactly end well for Democrats, did it?),” the Boston Globe editorial board wrote. “Warren missed her moment in 2016, and there’s reason to be skeptical of her prospective candidacy in 2020.”
Warren has lost her sense of direction, and her top advisers are seeking greener pastures in response.
Myers would be an asset to anyone looking to unseat Warren, who is currently at the top of the list of potential nominees, and she knows it. The Hill was careful to add that Myers isn’t just courting Beto; she’s speaking to other top campaigns as well.
But, given that rumors of her departure are now public, she’s probably not sticking with Warren.
Beto O’Rourke hasn’t made any official decisions just yet. He, like other contenders, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), says he’ll be taking the holidays to discuss the possibility with his family.
