Amid reports from the BBC that President Donald Trump will visit England in July and is likely to meet Queen Elizabeth “at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle,” the mayor of London took to social media to troll the US president while not-so-subtly urging protests.
Not that Nigel Farage, the conservative former leader of the UK Independence Party, was going let Mayor Sadiq Khan get away with it scot-free.
“Oh well done Sadiq, you could not have put out a more PC statement could you,” he said on his LBC radio show, mocking the “overly politically correct” language used by Mayor Khan.
Farage said President Trump may not visit Central London because of protesters, of which, Mayor Khan is doing his part to encourage.
Khan, who has accusing Trump of “amplifying” racism and fascism, and has said the U.S. president would “not be welcomed” in his city, took to Twitter to effectively urge residents to protest what’s being characterized as “a working visit,” masking the call to action as an example of Londoners holding the “liberal value of freedom of speech very dear.”
Nevermind that police in the United Kingdom monitor social media posts and warn that they “may be acted upon.”
“If he comes to London, President Trump will experience an open and diverse city that has always chosen unity over division and hope over fear. He will also no doubt see that Londoners hold their liberal values of freedom of speech very dear,” the Muslim mayor tweeted.

Farage, who tweeted that he was “delighted” that Trump was coming while noting this puts England a year behind France, responded to the mayor’s tweet by accusing him of “virtue signalling.”
(UK Prime Minister Theresa May visited President Trump in the US shortly after his inauguration.)
“If only Sadiq was as good at being Mayor as he is at virtue signalling,” he tweeted.

The reaction on social media featured a common theme, that being the hypocrisy of Khan touting freedom of speech in a country where the liberties of English subjects are routinely violated by authorities.
Here’s a sampling of the responses from Twitter:

Sit down. https://t.co/LXJoZXjnpw

People flying into London are banned because they have the wrong political opinions.
Comedians are arrested for jokes.
Most self-proclaimed “liberals” in the UK abandoned freedom of speech a long time ago. https://t.co/CaJHSzCSic

He really wrote they “hold their liberal values of freedom of speech very dear” while his country is punishing people for speaking. You can’t make this shit up. https://t.co/Ojt46IpXzc

Their “freedom of speech” that you seek to restrict vis-a-vis criticism of Islam? Or the freedom of speech that they’ll extend to @realDonaldTrump for his visit? ORRRRR are you just rabble rousing for a riot you fifth-columnist lunatic? https://t.co/ZPfVGzu5R2

Are you encouraging protest against President Trump? Damaging our special relationship with the US will do this nation no good whatsoever whatever one’s opinions of Trump. In the role you hold, shouldn’t you be bigger than petty personalised politics? https://t.co/cTtkHYFX2k

Nothing to see here. Just the Muslim mayor inciting protests for #trumpvisit – whilst preaching ‘unity’ & ‘hope’. I’d say pot/ kettle but I’ll be called racist for daring to use the word black. pic.twitter.com/oZIvdn49OT
