Senator Tom Cotton had an epic response for Lindsey Graham after the South Carolina senator “insulted” him. When Graham was asked if he would vote for a short-term budget proposal, he began comparing Cotton to Iowa Congressman Steve King, who takes a hard-line against illegal immigration.
“The Tom Cotton approach has no viability here,” Graham said last week. “He’s become sort of the Steve King of the Senate.”
Sen. Graham’s insult did not bother Cotton at all. Tom spotlighted the vast differences between King and Graham, a failed presidential candidate who dropped out of the race after polling less than 1%.
“The difference between Steve King and Lindsey Graham is that Steve King can actually win an election in Iowa,” Cotton said. “We had an election in 2016. Immigration was a major issue there, and the American people — and especially Republican primary voters — made it clear that they wanted Donald Trump’s vision of immigration policy, not Lindsey Graham’s.”
He continued: “Lindsey didn’t make it to the starting line [of the 2016 election]. He didn’t even make it off the kiddie table in the debates.”
Graham’s credibility as a conservative has been called into question after he said he supports a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal aliens who are in the United States unlawfully. Graham has also waffled on the border wall.
Cotton then tore into Graham further by slamming the “bipartisan DACA deal” Graham and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin claimed they had worked on together.
“When Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin agree on immigration, that’s not a bipartisan agreement,” Senator Cotton said. “Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin are not adversaries in negotiating. They are allies strategizing.”
Tom Cotton — a Harvard Law School graduate who was a captain in the U.S. Army — is being hailed as the future of the Republican party. He is a vocal Trump supporter and an advocate for a border wall. The 6-foot-5 former college basketball star is young (40), smart, and tough. What’s not to like?
“Walls work,” Cotton has said. “Even a shining city on a hill needs walls to defend itself.” Tom is right: Walls do work. Just ask the Chinese. And the Israelis.
