President Donald Trump earned a rare moment of praise from CNN on Thursday for following through on his campaign promises – a rarity amongst politicians in Washington D.C.
CNN, who gave Trump 93 percent negative coverage during the beginning months of his presidency, argued that Trump’s “unbreakable bond” with those who voted for him comes from the fact that he worked hard to deliver on his promises.
An analysis by CNN, titled “Donald Trump — keeper of promises,” concluded:
A politician who actually does what he told voters he would do seems almost unfathomable in Washington, a town of broken promises. For Donald Trump, being a president who delivers is especially crucial, since it’s one of the golden keys to his so far unbreakable bond with supporters.
It was just the latest instance of the President obstinately honoring the bumper-sticker vows he made to his ultra-loyal supporters — even those that horrify the political and foreign policy establishment, media critics and allied leaders.
CNN noted that while Trump has made a strong effort to be different from other politicians by following through on his promises, he still has many that he needs to follow through on.
“Once again, President Trump has demonstrated the kind of leadership that Washington does not recognize or understand,” Executive Director for Donald J. Trump for President, Michael Glassner said. “With Donald Trump a promise made is a promise kept.”
Highlights from CNN’s analysis on the promises that Trump has kept include:
- Has moved to renegotiate NAFTA
- Pulled out of the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal
- Pulled out of the Paris climate accord
- Has targeted the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal
- Implemented a travel ban targeting countries that are hotbeds of Islamic terrorism
- Pushed for harder immigration policies
- Strong economy and stock market
This is not the first time that CNN has highlighted Trump’s pursuit of following through on his campaign promises.
On January 27, 2017, seven days after taking the Oval Office, CNN reported that Trump was already “reinventing the presidency” as he began honoring campaign promises during his first week in office:
But the determination to keep campaign promises is verging on an obsession inside the Trump White House. Those close to the President believe that despite the uproar in Washington, the actions are being well received.
A senior aide inside the Trump administration explained to CNN at the time that Trump was not communicating to the millions of hardworking Americans that elected him to be President by following through on his promises.
“If you are somebody sitting at home, you say, ‘Wow, there’s a lot going on here.’ The media bubbles on the coast are not the people Trump is talking to,” the senior aide told CNN. “The people that Donald Trump is talking to are the thousands of counties that he won.”
