A 2006 video of Matt Lauer was unearthed Wednesday just hours after NBC News fired him from his role as co-host of the “Today” show over claims of sexual wrongdoing, and it’s stunning.
In the one-minute clip, captured on an in-studio feed, Lauer can be seen telling Katie Couric, who was co-hosting the morning news program at the time, to “keep bending over like that. It’s a nice view.”
Lauer, according to TMZ, made the comment immediately after he told Couric, who was bending over to pick up show scripts, that she was wearing a “pretty sweater.” His female co-host didn’t respond.
This 2006 clip is not the only incident involving Couric. In 2012, she told Bravo’s Andy Cohen that Lauer had a penchant for touching her buttocks inappropriately in the workplace.
“He pinches me on the ass a lot,” she said at the time.
On Wednesday afternoon, Variety published the details of its two-month investigation into Lauer and his alleged sexual misconduct. The outlet reported that multiple women complained about Lauer’s behavior over the years but that their accusations “fell on deaf ears, given the lucrative advertising surrounding ‘Today.’”
In addition to suggesting he would quiz his female coworkers about their sexual habits, the report claims Lauer once gave a colleague a sex toy as a present along with an explicit note explaining how he wanted to use it on her. In a different incident with another female employee, the former NBC News host exposed himself before reprimanding her for not engaging in sexual relations.
In a statement shared Wednesday morning, NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said the complaint that led to Lauer’s firing was the first NBC News received in his 20 years at the network, adding executives “were also presented with a reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
