According to a Fox News report, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is looking into possibly opening an investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s involvement with sales of a uranium mining company to Russia.
What is the Uranium One scandal?
In 2010, a company called Uranium One was partially sold to Russia’s nuclear authority Rosatom. The Toronto-based Canadian company owns some mining rights in the United States.
A committee on foreign investment in the United States reviewed the deal to make sure it didn’t endanger national security. The State Department would have had some say in the decision, as one of the nine agencies involved in the review.
Critics say that there was a quid pro quo — Bill Clinton received $500,000 for a speech in Moscow that was paid by an investment company with ties to the Kremlin and connections to Uranium One. Others say there is no connection between the speech payment and the decision made by the State Department.
What does Fox News say Sessions is doing about this?
Fox News reports that Sessions has written a letter in response to lawmakers asking about the sale of Uranium One, and that he has asked his senior federal investigators to look into the matter.
“The attorney general has directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters,” Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said in the letter.
“These senior prosecutors will report directly to the attorney general and the deputy attorney general, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a special counsel,” the letter continued.

The discovery of the letter comes at a opportune time — Sessions will be testifying before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday about new revelations in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian collusion and election interference.
