Did China just threaten us? It looks as if, yes, they did.
Global Times, a Chinese state run newspaper, just ran an editorial saying: “[i]f the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so.”

In other words, if the U.S. or South Korea strike first, China, a nuclear power state, will step in to try to stop us. The editorial also stated that, should North Korea strike the United States first, China should remain neutral.
In other words, if Korea strikes first, the U.S. is free to take them out with no retribution from China? Sounds like a flaky “friend” we have in China!
We note, the Global Times does not represent the official Chinese government position, but it is a popular newspaper in China.
The tensions are rising but both Trump and General Mattis still prefer a diplomatic resolution. General Mattis has said that a war with North Korea would be “catastrophic” but that “we are ready” if North Korea commits a hostile act, such as a strike on the U.S. territory of Guam.
