President Trump has embarked on a new civil rights effort by attacking what liberals have convinced many Americans is the very cornerstone of repairing race relations.
Racism is indeed bad. Folks should be rewarded based on merit alone, without the color of their skin playing any kind of determining role.
But the policy known as “affirmative action” more often than not doesn’t achieve that goal. In most cases, it simply reverses the roles of traditional race-based discrimination in this country.
No where is that more evident than on American university campuses. And Trump is having none of it.
The New York Times reports:
The Trump administration is preparing to redirect resources of the Justice Department’s civil rights division toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants, according to a document obtained by The New York Times.
The document, an internal announcement to the civil rights division, seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”
Make no mistake about it, Trump is going to face a major backlash over this effort.
But, thank God, we finally have a president who isn’t worried by political and media backlash, and is determined to do the right thing regardless of what critics have to say.
Affirmative action has failed for many long decades to have a positive effect on race relations in America. All it has done is make whites feel discriminated against as universities and places of employment once again approval applicants based on the color of their skin.
Some will say whites are receiving their just deserts after centuries of institutionalized racism against blacks. And, in some ways, that may be true.
But if the goal is to eliminate race-based discrimination, this isn’t the way to do it. Affirmative action only exacerbates the underlying problem by reversing the roles.
