Tommy Hilfiger Gloats Over Dressing Melania Trump

If you were already over the presidential campaigns by this summer, we have some bad news because it seems that 2016 is the election season that will not end. Though the ballots have been cast and the formation of the new White House cabinet is already well under way, it’s become clear that it’s not just the American public who are not going to let this go so easily, but fashion designers as well. While many refuse to comment on the subject altogether, others are taking strong stances when it comes to whether or not they will personally be dressing our next FLOTUS, Melania Trump. And now Tommy Hilfiger has made his position on the subject unequivocally clear, declaring that he is decidedly Team Trump.

While attending the Angel Ball in New York City, Hilfiger was asked by WWD about his fellow designers who are opposing lending their clothes to the future First Lady. He responded, saying, “I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”

Or course, this statement comes right on the heels of another bold pronouncement by one of his contemporaries, Sophie Theallet, who in an open letter on Twitter proclaimed she would not be lending her clothes to dress the next First Lady. The designer wrote, “As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by.” While both these designers have made their stances on the matter crystal clear, many others are still keeping mum on the controversial topic. But with inauguration day right around the corner, Melania will definitely be in need of a show-stopping gown, and it seems Tommy may have just bumped himself up to the top of that shortlist of names.
