Even Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s allies have begun criticizing her campaign for the lack of transparency about her health. While the pneumonia diagnosis was not severe, Democrats were angry because of the secrecy around the whole issue.
Clinton unwittingly made a molehill into a mountain.
One confidant described the events that culminated in Clinton leaving a Sept. 11 memorial early, as “a self-inflicted f***ing nightmare.”
While Clinton’s campaign was hurriedly trying to deal with the fallout from a video that showed the former secretary of state buckling at the knees and losing her balance following her early departure from the memorial, her allies and fellow Democrats were criticizing her campaign’s choice to keep her health concerns private.
David Axelrod, who served as a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, scolded Hillary on Twitter: “Antibiotics can take care of pneumonia, What’s the cure for an unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly creates unnecessary problems?”
A second Clinton supporter and ally, this one unnamed, told The Hill that her privacy about the situation made things worse:
“Why couldn’t the campaign just have been aboveboard about this? She got sick. Tell people she’s sick and move on. I know they thought it would give the right-wingers something to pounce on, but who cares?”
“That’s on the staff. That’s on us, and we regret that,” spokesman Brian Fallon said of the decision, while Jennifer Palmieri, another Clinton aide, responded to Axelrod on Twitter saying, “We could have done better yesterday.”
Donald Trump has wisely chosen not to use Clinton’s health issues as ammunition, and telling Fox News only that he hoped she “gets well and gets back on the trail and we’ll be seeing her at the debate.”
A huge issue with voters is Clinton’s lack of transparency. Polls have consistently shown that voters do not find Clinton trustworthy, nor do they think she is honest.
When even her friends are turning on her, it is clear that voters have been right all along.
